The Economic Benefits of Protected Areas

May 20, 2026 Ken Wu

The tired, old narrative in much of Canada is that protected areas destroy rural economies and jobs. The reality, based on decades of research and the experiences of surrounding communities, shows the opposite to be true: major protected areas attract, support and foster more diversified, resilient and prosperous economies. Protected areas hugely support stronger regional economies based on tourism, recreation, real estate, skilled labour, non-timber forest products and ecosystem services.
